Vivian Maier was one of the great street photographers. Working as a nanny, her photographs remained undiscovered until after her death, and it's still debated whether she wanted her images even to be seen by the public. You can hear more about her story and her photography in the excellent film Finding Vivian Maier and the online documentaries The Vivian Maier Photography Project and Who Took Nanny's Pictures.
She had a amazing eye for capturing expression and beauty and humour. Sometimes it's a moment that most of us would have missed.
Sometimes she composes patterns into an image with beauty beyond most street scenes.
There's a wonderful quirkiness to her images that I love. It seems that she was an unusual character and I hope she'd be glad that her images have been discovered and are inspiring many photographers so many years later.
