Brooklyn Street Photography Workshop - 1 Day

June 17, 2017

New York is the perfect location for street photography and the borough of Brooklyn is full of character, history and amazing light and color. It's cool and hip and home to one of the most vibrant arts communities in the country.

We'll start with a walk across the stunning Brooklyn Bridge, before exploring the neighborhoods of Dumbo and Red Hook. We'll spend some time enjoying the hipster scene in Williamsburg and the working-class surroundings and street art of Bushwick. We'll finish up at one of my favorite locations, Coney Island with it's classic amusement arcades, boardwalk and pier.

We'll be looking together for Light, Composition and Story. We'll find the light and shadows and colors in the midst of Brooklyn's historic past and present. We'll find the shapes and patterns and objects to create powerful backdrops. And we'll find the people and moments to document the story of life on the streets of Brooklyn in all it's glorious variety.

What you need

A digital camera and a reasonable understanding of it's basic functions. It doesn't need to be a high-end camera and you don't need a particular type of lens, although I wouldn't recommend only bringing a long telephoto lens. I can offer technical assistance on the workshop but the more familiar you are with your camera, the more you'll be able to devote your attention to the potential images around you. If you want to concentrate of smartphone photography that's fine too and we'll talk a little about it through the workshop.

You should also be able to comfortably walk for a few miles each day.

What's Included

Public transport (subway rides) during the workshop

What's Excluded

Travel to and from New York

The total cost for the one day workshop is $175 per person. Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 8 participants, to ensure we can all get to know each other and allow each other enough space to photograph as we explore the streets. The balance is due no later than 30 days before the start of the workshop.
