What Matters Most

What’s most important today? Aside from doing some normal daily health habits, what’s the one thing that would make today a successful day?

I’m often reminded how tempting it is to just do the easy stuff. The inconsequential. The next little task that feels productive regardless of whether it really is.

What usually matters most is learning and growing. Awareness and being kind and generous. Connection and community.

Stuff that’s hard and slow and painful and uncomfortable. Have a comfortable, easy day and we don’t change. Find a way to get awkward and uncomfortable, and it’s likely we’re learning, hopefully growing, developing more character. I like Brené Brown’s little phrase, “Be awkward, brave and kind”.

I have a daily item on my ToDo list in Apple Reminders that simply says ‘What Matters Most’. As a daily prompt to consider what action might be most valuable today. Maybe that’s one more step towards my current goals, or maybe it’s a kind word to someone that might need it. It isn’t always easy to know what that thing should be, but taking a few minutes to consider it is well worth it.
