Sony A7C Update

2 weeks and 3 photo shoots so far with the Sony A7C. So just a few initial impressions and thoughts so far.

What I like:

  • Size - I do love smaller cameras, and for full-frame this is pretty tiny. Close to a Leica M in size, given that the M has a larger body but tiny lenses.

  • Quality - it feels good, we’ll made, metal, weather-sealed.

  • Autofocus - it’s not perfect, but works very well even for video in low light. Probably the best I’ve used so far, although I do still miss how easy it is to change the size of the focus area on Fujifilm.

  • GPS - for some reason Sony is the only system I’ve used so far that picks up location data from my phone without having to reconnect each time I use it.

  • Viewfinder - the EVF is very small but actually works surprisingly well for me, even with glasses.

What I don’t like:

  • No 10-bit color in video

  • No tally lights

  • Tiny strap lugs - please Sony (and others), copy the ZV-E10/FX3/Canon-style attachment points on all cameras.

  • No front dial.

I knew those downsides before I got the camera. I don’t mind the single card slot since it’s either my b-cam or a street camera. I don’t mind the lack of 10-bit color. So far. We’ll see.

It’s a compromise, but it’s ideal as a b-cam. My other choice, the A7iv would have been $1k more (although admittedly more capable).

So I like it a lot. Missing a front dial is maybe the biggest annoyance, but that might be more the muscle-memory of using cameras that have them. As a b-cam, backup, second body and street camera paired with the little Sony 40mm f/2.5, it’s very good.
