Short Films

I watched a couple of great short films this week. (I’m well behind on my plan to watch about 10 movies each month, but I do have a couple of transatlantic flights very soon. I did enjoy watching the original Godzilla last night though).

Hair Love

The Backrooms

Very different, but they both follow at least parts of the classic ‘heroes journey’. The heroes find themselves in very unfamiliar circumstances, face peril, battle adversity, encounter the villain. There’s structure to the stories. And they absolutely connect and stir emotions, at least they did with me.

It seems that Kane Pixels has published a number of other shorts related to The Backrooms, but I haven’t watched them yet.

It’s said that a short film can have more freedom than a full feature-length production, can be more about the mood or about a concept rather than necessarily following a story. I think that’s true and there may not be time to develop a character to the same extent, but both of these cleary follow a defined story too. If you haven’t seen either, I’m sure you’ll enjoy at least one of them!
