How to Choose a Personal Project

Personal project might be our most important work, the images and imagery and narratives and locations that we care most about, and most want to show to others. Or at least they could or should be, but it can be hard to make time and hard to know what to include.

A few thoughts:

  1. What do you care most about at the moment? What have you been reading about or experiencing?

  2. What do you most want to add to your portfolio? Is there anything you feel compelled to make, even if it’s utterly daunting?

  3. Do you have access, or could you get it? Can you get there regularly without significant cost?

  4. Has anyone else done the same, or similar? Learn from what’s gone before but seek something unique too.

  5. What’s the concept? Can you describe it, simply, in a sentence or two?

  6. What makes it interesting, or educational, or both?
